ETA Passed but No Arrival Update: What to Check

If the ETA has passed and no actual arrival is reported, the shipment status is unresolved by that date alone. Check for a revised estimate and a confirmed event at the intended destination.

Read what the date actually describes

Check whether the date is an earlier plan, the latest estimate or an actual event. Then check its port. A past intermediate ETA cannot confirm arrival at the final ocean destination, and an estimated discharge cannot stand in for actual unloading.

Distinguish the event time from the update time

The time a tracking page was refreshed is not necessarily the time an event occurred. Record both where available. If the timestamp has no stated timezone, avoid silently treating it as your local time or UTC when coordinating a time-sensitive visit.

Ask for evidence instead of filling the gap

A missing event can leave several possibilities open. Ask the carrier or forwarder for the latest destination estimate and whether an actual arrival or discharge has been confirmed. A vessel position near a port does not settle the container event.

Keep collection provisional

Explain the uncertainty to transport and warehouse teams. Do not mark the shipment arrived solely because time has passed, and do not send a truck solely on that basis. Confirm destination discharge, release and terminal requirements before collection.

What to check next

  1. Check the latest report: Compare the displayed ETA with the most recent carrier information.
  2. Look for actual events: Check the event type, container and destination.
  3. Resolve the missing update: Contact the carrier or forwarder with the exact reference and question.

Should the status automatically become arrived after ETA?

No. A date passing does not provide a confirmed arrival event.

Does missing AIS mean the ship has not departed?

No. Missing vessel-position information does not establish the shipment’s departure or arrival status.
