Container ETA Changed: What to Check Next

A revised ETA changes the arrival plan. First check which port and event the date belongs to, then review what needs to change in your own arrangements.

Compare the same milestone

Compare the earlier and latest estimates for the same container, port and event. A transshipment arrival and a destination arrival are different milestones, even if both are labelled ETA. Keep the original reference date visible when describing how much a plan has moved.

Example: a later estimate is still an estimate

Illustrative example: the destination ETA moves from 13 October to 1 November. That is a 19-day change between the calendar dates. It does not establish the cause, confirm the actual arrival date, or prove that the container missed a sailing. Use exact timestamps and timezones when the distinction matters.

Keep the latest confirmed event separate

A schedule can change before loading is confirmed. Record the latest actual event alongside the revised plan rather than advancing the shipment because an estimated date has passed. Planned, estimated and actual dates answer different questions.

Update commitments with the right information

Review transport bookings, warehouse capacity and customer expectations against the latest carrier estimate. Ask your carrier or forwarder about any important connection or unexplained change. Keep pickup timing provisional until discharge, release and terminal requirements are confirmed.

What to check next

  1. Identify the comparison: Write down the reference, destination and both reported dates.
  2. Check confirmed progress: Read the latest actual event and its location independently of the sailing plan.
  3. Review arrangements: Tell the relevant team what changed, what is confirmed and what still needs checking.

Does a later ETA prove why the shipment is delayed?

No. A changed date alone does not identify a cause. Ask the carrier or forwarder when the explanation matters.

Does AIS replace the carrier ETA in CargoFlowPlus?

No. Available vessel positions provide separate context. CargoFlowPlus uses the carrier-reported ETA for operational planning.
