Shipping line prefixes

Carrier-owned boxes usually move under that carrier's bookings, but alliance and slot agreements mean another line can carry them. The carrier on your booking or bill of lading is the one to track with.

Leasing company prefixes

Leasing companies rent containers to many shipping lines, so their prefixes do not identify the carrier. Track leased boxes with the shipping line on your documents, or by booking or bill of lading number.

How CargoFlowPlus handles it

  1. Find the prefix: Use the first four letters of the container number to find the owner.
  2. Check the number: Confirm the check digit so you are not searching for a mistyped container.
  3. Track with the right carrier: Use the carrier guide, or follow ETA changes and free time in CargoFlowPlus.

Where do container prefixes come from?

Owner codes are registered with the Bureau International des Containers (BIC) under ISO 6346. Each code belongs to one owner, which can be a shipping line, a leasing company or another container owner.

My prefix is not in the list. What now?

This list covers the most common shipping line and leasing prefixes. Look the code up in the BIC owner code register, and track the container with the carrier named on your booking or bill of lading.
